Foam Testing
Testing is important because storage conditions can impact the integrity of your firefighting foam. Idle foam is susceptible to multiple elements of contamination, causing sediment accumulation and proportioning errors. Not only can foam leach from the container, but outside elements can cause evaporation or freezing of the concentrate, with risk of dilution if water enters the storage tank.
At our in-house lab we conduct these required NFPA 11 performance tests, which simulate the real-life effectiveness of foam: Expansion Rate, Quarter Drain Time & Film Formation. To determine why your foam may have failed a performance test we also conduct the following IMO 1312 recommended tests: Refractive Index, Specific Gravity, pH, and Viscosity. NFPA 11 requires the annual testing of foam concentrate.
Foam Proportioning
To ensure the correct proportioning of foam in your system we conduct an onsite foam precision test that evaluates conductivity and the Refractive Index. Testing foam proportioning is essential to ensure a system is not too rich or lean. A rich foam solution will not only waste money, but it may also accumulate sediment in your system. On the other hand, a lean solution will take longer to extinguish a fire and may not be as effective in vapor suppression, thereby leading to burn back. It may also drain too quickly and create holes in the foam blanket.
Foam Removal / Replacement
If your foam fails testing or if you would like to buy new foam, our team can provide valuable information about purchasing replacement foam. For your consideration we provide a list of substitute foams along with additional details to properly assess your options and make informed decisions. The companies we endorse provide complete removal and environmentally sound disposal. Beyond just a measure of eco-friendliness we also provide the low-cost options, from adding foam to a tank, to complete removal of foam from your system.
Our process is thorough & cost effective.
1 – WE GO TO YOUR BUSINESS
Efficiency is our priority. Collecting a sample of your foam ourselves yields a quicker turnaround than getting a third party involved. We forward samples to our own lab for immediate testing, and thanks to this direct line of operations, we can save you valuable time and money.
2 – WE TEST A SAMPLE OF YOUR FOAM
Our collection team will perform a very thorough assessment of your current system. We collect foam samples quickly and meet the required safety procedures throughout the entire process. Each sample is then tested in-house by our lead chemical engineer.
3 – WE REVIEW YOUR RESULTS
While our company does not sell or install firefighting foam, we do consult our customers on matters of compliance. Based on your test results we discuss why your foam failed the test (unless passed), what the remedies are, and how you can improve your extinguishment system. The information we provide includes environmental impacts, safety, legality, and the distribution of AFFF, AR-AFFF (C6, C8), Protein, Fluoroprotein, and Fluorine Free Foam.
